iPad Point of Sale App: Huge Benefits…Zero Training…No Manual2 min read

Point of Sale App:Award winning, multi-channel, multi-national fashion retailer, Aurora Fashions, began trialing a new iPad POS mobile ordering system (referred to throughout the balance of this article as an “iPad point of sale app”) in eight of its London and Oxford stores in August.

Aurora’s Director of Group Strategic Development, Ish Patel, discussed some of the huge benefits of the iPad point of sale app with ComputerWeekly.com — the UK’s leading online technology news and IT-management source. Top on Patel’s list: portability, familiarity, intuitivity, and ease of use.

  • Portability means that the iPad point of sale app can be used anywhere in the store, even in the fitting room. Patel doesn’t think a customer, who has already waited in line for the fitting room, should have to wait in line again at the register to pay for their merchandise. He asks rhetorically, “Once a customer has queued at the fitting room, why should they queue again at the cash desk?”
  • Familiarity means that since smartphones and tablets, in general, are much more familiar to customers and staff than, say a kiosk, would be, and most have already used an iPhone or iPad, there’s no learning curve. For store staff, not having to “spend time figuring out order entry fields” on the iPad point of sale app, means associates “can spend more time helping the customer,” says Patel.
  • Intuitivity means something that is easy to learn and easy to understand; intuitivity and ease of use go hand-in-hand. In the past, any move to adopt a new technology in a retail environment required significant formal staff training. But, Patel told ComputerWeekly that adopting the iPad point of sale app in Aurora’s stores required no training – zero. “Store teams have been able to take it on without training material and use it in ways we hadn’t anticipated – such as using the camera and web experience,” he said.

According to Patel, the portability, familiarity, intuitivity, and ease of use of the iPad point of sale app are making Aurora completely rethink how the company trains its staff and how it uses new technology. “It’s like computer games,” he said. “There is no big manual.”
