FöD’s Digital Menu Restaurants Wins 2011 NRN Hot Concept! Award2 min read
Each year, Nation’s Restaurant News (NRN) identifies five “young, growing chains that embody the perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit of the restaurant industry” to receive NRN’s Hot Concepts! awards for the way in which the concept identifies and capitalizes upon market opportunities. This year, FöD (an acronym which stands for Food on Demand), a concept owned by Gaithersburg, Maryland-based Sodexo, which operates a digital menu restaurants on six college or university campuses in four states –California, Illinois, New York, and Vermont, was one of the five winners.
The six campuses currently home to FöD’s digital menu restaurants concept are California Lutheran University (CLU) (Thousand Oaks, CA), Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA), Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), Colgate University (Hamilton, NY), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (Troy, NY), and the University of Vermont (UVM) (Burlington, VT). FöD, which debuted last year and is marketed to Sodexo’s client base of 600 colleges and universities, is now looking to expand its digital menu restaurants concept to campuses in Kentucky and Missouri; the concept is scheduled to open at three additional campuses this year.
FöD’s digital menu restaurants offers college and university campuses a customizable dining program that emulates a restaurant; they offer students a fast and efficient high-tech, customizable, restaurant-quality dining experience. Daily food selections come from FöD’s extensive recipe library of 400+ recipes designed by chef-restaurateurs feature the cuisine of more than 80 different countries. Some of the menus, like the Vietnamese and Thai dishes by Chef Mai Pham and the high-end Mexican cuisine by Chef Roberto Santibañex, have been created exclusively for the digital menu restaurant.
About 500 students and staff per meal eat at each digital menu restaurants. Guests at each digital menu restaurant use touch-screen kiosks to place their food orders, watch their food being prepared, and receive notification on their smart phone or pager when their order is ready.
