The iPad Menu at Felix: Magic or Digital Feng Shui?3 min read
Earlier this year, Hong Kong’s historic, five-star luxury hotel, The Peninsula Hong Kong, presented the arrival of Felix Chef Yoshiharu Kaji and announced the June launch of the new interactive iPad menu at Felix – The Peninsula’s legendary, 28th floor, trendy, smart- casual dining restaurant and bar, created by world-famous French avant-garde designer, Philippe Starck. Named for Felix M. Bieger, three-time General Manager of The Peninsula Hong Kong, Felix opened in 1994 and, for the next ten years or so, was the dominant player in Hong Kong’s nightlife.
More recently, however, according to an article in this month’s issue of Robb Report, that title is being challenged. It seems the lack of a rooftop terrace has made it more difficult for Felix to compete with the city’s growing obsession with nightlife roof-top bar-hopping. But, those with their finger on the pulse of Hong Kong nightlife know that no rooftop terrace in the city can compare with the magic at Felix!
The magic begins the moment a guest steps off the lift and enters the restaurant’s “surreal and ultra-contemporary setting,” with its long, lit, white marble bar and breathtaking, panoramic, and auspicious views of Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong Island, and Kowloon – views which, each evening, become even more spectacular, when “A Symphony of Lights” — the famed magical nightly light display — dances between Victoria Peak and Victoria Harbour. Each dinner guest at Felix is welcomed with a sleek iPad menu – a digital amuse-bouche from Chef Yoshiharu Kaji — each tantalizing photo a small taste of the imagination, intensity, and inspiration of Chef Kaji’s culinary artistry, designed to whet the guest’s appetite and help prepare them for the meal.

But the iPad menu at Felix is more than magic; it’s digital Feng Shui! The Peninsula says the iPad menu is “in perfect harmony with Chef Kaji’s innovative cuisine.” The iPad menu enables guests to visually sample each of Chef Kaji’s magical infusions of texture, taste and ingredients before ordering, navigate Felix’ magnificent wine list with ease, find tasting notes and other detailed information for each appellation, and learn recommended wine pairings or let the digital sommelier select the perfect wine to complement their meal.
Now, Felix is considering expanding the content of its iPad menu. On August 11, HK Magazine reported that, in light of the growing trend in Hong Kong to favor an open-kitchen design, where culinary skills are showcased, guests at Felix may soon be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at where the magic happens – the mise en place of the new Chef de Cuisine’s gourmet wizardry.
