Qin Harmonizes Ancient Chinese Culture with iPad Handheld Menu2 min read

Last Sunday, journalist Zhao Yanrong of China’s national English newspaper, China Daily — commonly considered the most authoritative and influential English media in China, reported that customers have been pleasantly surprised to receive an iPad handheld menu at Qin Restaurant and Café.

At first, the iPad handheld menu might seem out of place here. Located northeast of the Yu Yang Hotel, in the Chaoyang District of east Beijing, Qin is not your typical Beijing dining venue. City Weekend, “China’s leading English-language lifestyle and entertainment magazine and website,” says the restaurant, which is named for the famed 3000 year-old Chinese stringed musical instrument, “takes pride in providing an opportunity and space for people who are interested in learning more about traditional Chinese culture and music.”

Here, antiques abound. Global Times describes the setting: the front door, is “carved with an ancient music score from the Forbidden City collection”; the brick screen at the second floor entrance, “with the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove (seven well-known scholars of metaphysics in Wei of the Three Kingdoms (220—265)) reciting poetry and playing guqin”; the bamboo backdrop bears “excerpts from ancient books”; the tea tables are “constructed from golden bricks used in the ground of the Forbidden City halls with Qing Dynasty (1644—1911) girders”; the dining tables are hand painted with Chinese landscapes and “literary vignettes”; and the ancient qugin table in the center of the stage holds one of the ancient instruments from the Yuan Dynasty (1279—1368).

But, in Beijing, a city “dedicated to modernization,” the iPad handheld menu is a welcome and well-received addition. ClubTime, a website dedicated to Beijing nightlife and fashion, calls Qin a great place to “enjoy, exchange and relax.” And, of course, eat.

Management at Qin is also pleased. The iPad handheld menu has increased orders, and, according to Zhang Lichang, Qin’s manager, reduced costs and improved efficiency.
